“Door Security: there are several aspects to take into account when assessing the security of your door. Firstly the door itself should be a solid core door. Hollow core doors are unacceptable for the fact that a) they are not up to fire standards and b) they don’t provide protection against brute force attack. Solid doors will set you back more initially but they will last longer and will resist weathering for many years to come. Next is the doorframe. The frame is particularly important, as it is responsible for securing the lock into the strike (the strike is the catch that the lock throws into) Without a solid frame the security rating against brute force attack would be quite low. The Frame needs to be made of metal ideally, solid wood being the next best option. A case study to illustrate the security benefit of a metal frame is when we were called out one night to a plumbing emergency; a pipe had burst inside a unit. The police had been called and had attempted to kick the door in, however they were unsuccessful because the strike was installed to a metal frame. Wood would not have held up against the police officer’s attempt at forced entry. Next is the lock. External doors should be fitted with a high security lock, such as a CHUBB 5 lever mortice lock or good quality deadlatch such as the Lockwood 001 or 355. Especially suitable would be the 355, although it is not accepted on unit doors, as it’s a fire hazard. The 355 has been designed to resist jimmy attack and can also be installed on sliding doors for those who want a high security alternative to a standard sliding door lock. When installing a deadbolt you should take into account the way the bolt throws into the frame when assessing the protection the lock will provide. For example a deadbolt will throw a bolt approximately 20mm in diameter directly into the frame. A higher security option would be to install a 355 deadbolt as it throws a bolt into a strike that affixes to the frame with multiple anchorage points. These multiple anchorage points will make it more difficult to force the door. A 355 is available in different colours and can be fitted to metal or wooden frames, it’s a quality product from Lockwood.
Security tips for the DIY’er. If you are installing a lock such as a 001 or a 355 into a timber frame do not use the screws that come supplied. We recommend buying longer thicker screws that anchor deep into the frame. The frame strengther screws should always be used when installing the strike (supplied with the lock) and pre drilling is vital as these screws are thick and can split the timber.
“I had to install a fire rated deadlock to my new apartment, as when I bought it the unit it only came with a knobset. I called Open Sesame Locksmiths Bellevue Hill and asked them to supply and fit an appropriate lock. They recommended the Lockwood 001 deadlatch. They also advised me that insurers would be checking to see that I had a quality deadlatch installed in the case of a claim, and that this lock met insurers requirements. They installed and keyed it alike to my existing lock. Since then they have done another 5 apartments in my block, I only wonder why the units didn’t come with one of these in the first place. Anyway thanks, your Bellevue Hill Locksmith service was excellent!
